Shamel Pitts

Shamel was born in Brooklyn New York. He began his dance training at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts and continued, simultaneously, at The Ailey School. Shamel then went on to receive his BFA in Dance from The Juilliard School and began his professional dance career with BJM_Danse Montreal and Mikhail Baryshnikov’s Hell’s Kitchen Dance. Shamel continued his career with Batsheva Dance Company for 7 years.

Shamel is a teacher of Gaga, the movement language created by Ohad Naharin, and has taught for both Batsheva Dance Company and Ensemble. He has been on faculty for Movement Invention Project in NYC under the direction of Alexandra Wells. He has also been on faculty and a guest teacher at Netherlands Dance Theater Summer Intensive, SUNY Purchase, and The Juilliard School. Shamel created a poetic dance performance installation entitled, BLACK BOX: Little Black Book Of RED.

Class Information

Addo Platform would like to invite the Toronto Community to our Gaga People classes. Our Gaga People classes will be lead by international artist Shamel Pitts & Canadian Gaga teacher Alvin Collantes.

Gaga/people classes are open to people ages 16+, regardless of their background in dance or movement. No previous dance experience is needed - professional dancers are also welcomed.

Gaga/people classes last for one hour and are taught by dancers who have worked closely with Ohad Naharin. Teachers guide the participants using a series of evocative instructions that build one on top of the other. Rather than copying a particular movement, each participant in the class actively explores these instructions, discovering how he or she can interpret the information and perform the task at hand. Gaga/people classes offer a creative framework for participants to connect to their bodies and imaginations, increase their physical awareness, improve their flexibility and stamina, and experience the pleasure of movement in a welcoming, accepting atmosphere.

Participants should wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to dance barefoot or in socks. It is advisable to bring a bottle of water and a towel for use after class
